Sure, they may be lacking a little in the depth department when compared to their 3D counterparts , but they more than make up for this with their beautiful visuals, stunning storylines, and marvelous mechanics. What’s more, there are hundreds of them to choose from.

For all of the wonderful 2D games that are out there though, some set themselves apart from the rest. They’re the ones that most of you can never forget and often end up going back to time and time again.

They have stolen the hearts of gamers and brought with them an incredible amount of fans and new players to the genre. Due to this influx of popularity, new games are rising up the ranks of the Metacritic rating system.

So, if you’re looking for a new 2D game that will keep you hooked, look no further than these masterpieces. This relatively new game has rave reviews and was even nominated for the game awards.

Nevertheless, this game is an absolute joy to play and really rings true to its predecessors, also being a little more beginner-friendly than other Guilty Gear games.

The controls are relatively easy to get used to and the graphics are just stunning. If you’re a fan of fighter games then give this one a shot. Many consider Super Meat Boy to be the game that started the indie revolution; providing inspiration and confidence to hoards of would-be developers who started with little more than an idea and a dream. However, despite its creepy look, it’s a joy to play and experience. At its core is a puzzle-solving platformer that will engage, shock, and enthrall until the very end. Hollow Knight is an absolute classic, but it’s surprisingly only given a rating of 87 on Metacritic, which isn’t as high as many fans think it deserves. Nevertheless, this game absolutely deserves to be ranked as one of the greatest 2D games on the market currently.

The hand-drawn artwork is enough to grant Hollow Knight a rating of 87, but this game has so much more available for fans and new players to love. Ultimately, Hollow Knight is a stunning adventure game with music that will immerse and soothe the soul at the same time. It has some relatively challenging controls but once you get used to them and fully appreciate the game, it’ll become one of your top titles.

Speaking of classics that everyone loves, this wonderful game has won the hearts of millions. After its final update, many new fans and seasoned players flocked back to Terraria, boosting it to a rather impressive rating of 88 on Metacritic. It isn’t just the rating that proves Terraria is a game worth checking out – it’s the mods, the artwork, the controls, and the gameplay that will win over anyone interested in a 2D sandbox adventure.

It’s one of those games that you just know will never get old or boring. You can get lost in Terraria and, because of the many updates, you’ll never run out of things to do, bases to build, and bosses to fight. Were it not for the success of other independent games like Castle Crashers and Limbo, the world may never have been blessed with Moon Studios’ fantastic debut title Ori and The Blind Forest.

It was the success of the aforementioned games that finally encouraged Thomas Mahler to leave his position with Blizzard Entertainment and, together with Gennadiy Korol, form the fledgling game studio. Their first release is one of the most visually impressive games of the decade, with its bright colors and individually crafted backgrounds offering up a real treat for the eyes. The bulk of the game was created by a team of just four people, whilst the foundations on which the final release was built were laid in just four days as part of a Game Jam event.

Understandably, the 8-bit art style may not be to everyone’s taste, but to older gamers, at least, it will likely serve as a welcome reminder of a bygone era. That said, the color palette is far more adventurous than some of the 2D games of yesteryear and really helps to bring some of the game’s beautiful backdrops to life. It controls well, features a wonderful soundtrack from Lena Raine, and provides plenty of challenge without ever feeling too unfair.

Limbo is the type of game where you will die on multiple occasions, but nevertheless, it is a relatively short game. This doesn’t mean it isn’t meaningful, although the ending may feel it on the first run. It’s the type of game that requires a few separate runs to really appreciate what is happening but is still unique and enjoyable to play. Similar to Inside , Limbo has a dark and creepy atmosphere with moody lighting and simplistic drawings. However, it is more of a dark puzzle-platformer that constantly trolls you as you struggle through the world of Limbo to save your sister.

Everyone knows about Cuphead so it’s no surprise that it has a score of 88, no matter how infuriating it may be. Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game that places you into countless challenges with boss battles. Which, while frustrating, is incredibly rewarding when you succeed. What makes this game stand out so much is how beautiful and well made the visuals are, with the creators using the same techniques of the s era it’s set in.

Using traditional hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. It’s a game not to be missed, but it will be incredibly frustrating. What might initially attract you is the stunning visuals it presents.

It’s calming and beautiful and will enchant anyone playing. However, it isn’t just the visuals that make this game deserving of such a high score. As many fans have previously said, this game is emotional and may leave you feeling empowered and in need of a few tissues. So if you’re looking for an emotionally and engaging experience then look no further.

When it comes to Metroidvania-style platformers, they really don’t come much better than Guacamelee. It may not provide much in the way of length, but it more than makes up for this with its tight combat, wonderful soundtrack, and eye-catching visuals. What’s more, there’s some fantastic humor sprinkled throughout the game that will keep you laughing from start to finish.

The Super Turbo Championship Edition is undoubtedly the best way to experience all that Guacamelee has to offer, although the sequel is just as impressive for those looking for a more modern title. The quality of life updates it brings with it definitely improve the formula, although, for whatever reason, it’s just not quite as charming as its predecessor.

If you like puns and you like fun then look no further, as there’s plenty of both to be found here. Stardew Valley is another extremely well-known game but unlike any other. Rather than a platform game or a puzzle, this is a relaxing farming game with secrets, twists, and a variety of stories everywhere you look. It tells the tale of an office worker, unhappy with their life when they inherit their grandfather’s farm who runs off to live a new more nature-filled life.

You can raise animals, grow crops, explore the mines, and even start a family , all in this adorable and stunning game. It’s well worth a try. This 2d base-building game doesn’t look like it will be as engaging as it actually is, but there’s just so much to do.

Many players report that the game almost pulls you in and never lets go. It’s addictive, enjoyable, and never-ending, just what you want from a game like Factorio. Perhaps one of the best aspects of Factorio is the wide range of mods available.

They spice the game up a little if you’ve exhausted the available gameplay, or if you just want to make your life a little easier. World Of Goo is a fun construction puzzle game that is an ideal time waster. It’s a fun and somewhat challenging game that forces you to think but not so hard that it gets frustrating, which is what makes its rating so high.

It seems like this game is timeless since it came out in and remains popular, however it did just get an update which acts as a remastered version showing that players may get some new levels to enjoy more than ten years after its release.

This time-bending and reality-altering puzzle platformer will keep anyones mind working at full speed, whilst still having fun. It has an interesting style that isn’t seen in many 2D games. It’s drawn in a painterly style which is both awesome to look at and extremely unique. It draws you in and keeps you engaged whilst you come up with ways to survive the puzzle ahead, making this game an extremely enjoyable one and an experience that isn’t worth missing out on.

What is perhaps the best thing about Braid is how forgiving it is. If you don’t like or can’t figure out a puzzle then you can simply move on and solve it later, so less stuck on one scene, and more gameplay.

Despite having been around for more than a decade now, Spelunky still holds up fantastically well. This is in large thanks to its simplistic visuals and some wonderful gameplay mechanics that have aged like a fine bottle of wine.

It’s a game that played a huge role in the popularization of the roguelike genre and was a big hit with players and critics alike when it first released.

There are one or two issues here and there when it comes to the way that the spelunker controls, but these are but minor annoyances in the grand scheme of things. With enough practice, you’ll easily get used to these little quirks and can then concentrate on enjoying everything else that the game has to offer. It’s a fairly short game when all’s said and done, but the procedurally generated stages make it infinitely replayable.
